FILM: Toy Story 3 - Where's the dad?

An appendix to the Toy Story 3 review – where was the dad in that movie? All the while the boy is getting ready for college, the father is nowhere to be seen, just the mum (Laurie Metcalf). I don’t remember him in either of the previous two movies, and he’s not in the credits for any of them.

A brief conversation with a media studies graduate provided a possible answer, in that men in Disney movies don’t tend to appear in everyday roles – they’re extraordinary heroes, not stay-at-home schmoes. Leaving aside the fact that the first Toy Story came out in 1995, when Pixar wasn’t part of Disney, it’s an interesting idea.
